When it comes to the adage "It is better to be seen and not heard," our frog friends didn't get the memo. Often discovered only by their distinctive "Croak, croak, croak!" and never spotted, frogs are an important part of our ecosystem, keeping our environment "green" in more ways than one. The frog—ganaaw in Sm'algyax, the language of Ts'mysen people—is what’s known to scientists as an “indicator species,” as the health of their populations can indicate the health of their ecosystems. From chowing down on pesky mosquitos to themselves being an important food source for various fish, birds, and mammals, frogs play a vital role in nature.
Ts'mysen (Tsimshian) artist David Robert Boxley honors our amphibious relative in his Jumping Frog Scarf. David mirrored the design: does your scarf show two different frogs, or is it perhaps one frog and his own reflection as he splashes his way pondward? Only you and the lilypads can tell, because all the frog says is "Ribbit!"
Our Jumping Frog Scarf is part of our Gold Label collection of Seattle-made wool textiles, knit right in our Seattle studio on state-of-the-art knitting machines. It is knit of ultra-soft 100% Merino wool, which naturally provides warmth and coziness without static. The two colorways—a green-on-green option with accents of copper, and a creamy white with hits of green and copper—means it’s easy to find a Jumping Frog that toad-ally fits your style.
