"In many Native cultures, including mine, the idea of gifting or giveaway is incredibly important," shares Osage artist Dante Biss Grayson, designer of our Honoring Shawl. "We honor people by giving to them, and gifts often carry a special meaning or blessing. After ceremonies, we give gifts as a way to wish others well on their journey ahead, sharing good medicine for their travels. This shawl is designed with that same spirit of generosity and care, embodying the idea that what we give comes back to us in positive ways. It's more than just an accessory—it's a symbol of connection, respect, and honor."
The intricate linework of Dante's design is layered with meanings, making literal and figurative pathways across his Honoring Shawl. "The patterns in the scarf are derived from designs I’ve worn throughout my life, from family gatherings to major ceremonies," says Dante. As an Osage straight dancer, my ribbon work reflects not just an artistic expression, but the deeper ceremonial significance of In-Lon-Schka, a dance central to Osage culture. In-Lon-Schka is about coming together as a people and celebrating our shared identity, which is why the design honors those traditions, while also being wearable for anyone. This piece serves as a bridge between past and present, tradition and modernity."
