Jessica Rosemary Harjo incorporates traditional designs from her diverse tribal backgrounds with fresh depictions of the complex balance of masculinity in the Osage ribbon work borders with the femininity of the Otoe floral designs. The palate of bright colors allow the surface designs to pop, while close inspection provides a glimpse at the ongoing complexity of the fundamental basis of the Osage design as mirror to Harjo’s own upbringing. The design is both genius and beautiful just like Harjo.

Pat Bruderer works in an ancient, yet little known art form that existed among all first nations where the white birch grows in North America. Birch Birch Biting has often been used to transfer patterns on to hide or cloth for use in beadwork, quill work, and quilting patterns. Pat’s technical mastery of this demanding art form and her artistry have captured the heart this reader. To see more works of BBB, check out Pinterest.
