Be amazed by the semi-finalists! (1 of 2) - Wool Blanket Design Contest

March 25, 2019 177 Comments

After a difficult and careful review of over 200 submissions from artists across the U.S. and Canada, the Eighth Generation team has selected 13 semi-finalists. This blog announces the first 6, and the next blog post will announce the remaining 7.  After a period of community feedback, we will decide on 4 finalists!

We encourage you to show love and support for this year's semi-finalists (and the previously highlighted Honorable Mentions)by leaving a comment about your favorites! Keep in mind that the art below are broader examples of their work - not necessarily wool blanket designs - so you'll have to use your imagination! We've added a link to the artists website or social media pages whenever possible.

Take a look at the beautiful artwork below, and please feel free to share with your networks!  And be sure to keep an eye out for the next batch of Semi-Finalists.

Fox Spears -  Karuk

"This design is so serene, but also so powerful and bold. For me, it holds an amazing feeling of balance of lightness and heaviness." - Kim Kroeker, Design Support

Carol Douglas - Northern Arapaho - Seminole Nation of Oklahoma

"I love this piece because women represent the gift of life, the backbone in our community." - H.L. Belmont Jr., Studio Assistant

Jennifer Riley - Acoma, Nambe and Laguna

"This submission was among our favorites. We feel that the colors and design work would be easily adaptable to become a wool blanket that could be appreciated by people from all backgrounds." - Serene Lawrence, Project Manager

Darby Raymond-Overstreet - Diné/Navajo

"I love the elegance of this design. It's timeless and transcendentally beautiful as a stand-alone piece or as a blanket." -Kim Kroeker, Design Support

Sydney Jacobs - Mohawks of Akwesasne

"I'm drawn to the perfect composition of the work...and that the design is not composed of flat lines, it's made with beads. The design is simple, but it's a perfect blending of precision and the 'artist hand.'" - Louie Gong, Founder & Owner

Jeremy Fields - Pawnee/Crow/Chickasaw

"This is stunning! I loved the choice in colors." - Adriana Perrusquia, Communications Specialist

If I was gonna wrap myself in a blanket Jennifer Riley’s would be amazing because it’s just so statement, but if I think about living with a wool blanket for a long time or in many places/situations or gifting one, I would pick the design by Fox Speares, for the same reasons that Kim says in her note! And I think like the note about what the staff thought of Jennifer’s design could be applied to this design too, adaptable and appreciated by people from all backgrounds.

I gotta go with Darby.
Would like to see the design a bit larger on the background.
I believe I saw a comment on one of the semi-finalist blog posting -about making a calendar with these designs/photos. That would be awesome.

I like Fox Spears’ work. I personally would love to see Eighth Generation showcase more California Native art, as a lot of what has been done in the past has been art by PNW, plains, or southwest artists

They’re all so amazing, but I have to give my vote to Carol Douglas’ design. The piece not only reflects the strength of our native women, but also reminds us of the important role they have in our communities and why we need to ensure that no more of our sisters go missing.

Sorry, I thought I sent in my comment successfully already. I was grabbed right away by Fox Spears’design, and it would be a beautiful blanket. Since I am drawn to geometrics, Jennifer Riley gets my vote as well. Carol Douglas did an exceptional job, but I am not sure how this piece would work as a blanket; it is 3 dimensional.

There is definitely some fierce competition going on here. But my top picks are:

Fox Spears – for the serenity that the colors and design evoke. I feel as if I’m sitting next to a lake—whether it be in the bright sun of summer’s warmth, bundled up in the chill of fall, or gazing comfortably from indoors out at the waters churned by a storm’s tempest.

Jennifer Riley – for the vibrant excitement of the warm colors and lively design. I feel as if I’m at pow wow proudly mesmerized by the beat of the drums as the men, in their myriad of colorful regalia, powerfully dance to tell their own interpretations of each song. Or as the women appear to dance as butterflies with their intricate steps, spins, and flowing shawls.

Sydney Jacobs – As a Seneca sister I feel proud to have our heritage represented by such an elegantly simple design. Although shown only in black and white, my mind’s eye envisions multiple combinations of beautifully colored raised bead designs.

Good luck to all!

Darby Raymond-Overstreet has such a highly developed artistic talent. Her work, which she incorporates into a loom, is an original idea. As a Navajo I know that type of work is highlighting out culture through art. Darby’s artistic work also incorporated into a wool blanket would be a fantastic representation of our tribe.

I appreciate both Carol Douglas’ and Jennifer Riley’s designs. Incorporating the three dimensional aspect of Carol Douglas’ basket into a blanket design will make for an interesting challenge. The delicate lines of Jennifer Riley’s pottery tiles seem more accessible in a beautiful blanket than the resplendent Acoma pottery itself.
