The playful steps and the iconic belly slide of the river otter is honored in this traditional Ojibwe pattern called "otter steps," and lovingly adapted by Anishinaabe/Ojibwe artist Sarah Agaton Howes for our Otter Steps Pillow.
Traditionally seen on beadwork, quillwork, and appliqué, this historic pattern is undergoing a modern-day renaissance with contemporary Ojibwe artists. “These geometric designs carry a timeless simplicity we know is loved by all,” says Sarah, who has incorporated a modern pastel palette to complement the age-old geometrics. The design of this pillow is "chain-stitched" on both sides, making for gorgeous, up-close details and a silky, raised texture.
