When you go for a hike in the Pacific Northwest, what do you notice? Maybe you hear the birds singing to each other, the cedar trees swaying their leaves to the rhythm of the wind, or maybe you smell soil, freshly hydrated from the rain.
From the trees whose roots are deep into the earth, to the rain that gives life to all, to even the moon and sun, everything is connected. For the Snoqualmie people, Moon the Transformer controls the water and tides of the Earth, while Cedar trees provide the basis for everything, including the storyboards that are carved to tell spiritual stories. Inspired Natives® artist, Bethany Fackrell (Snoqualmie) pays homage to Moon the Transformer, cedar trees, and storyboard carvings in her Moon Carver Wool Blanket. At the heart of her design, five moons orbit the center of her blanket, representing the five clans of Snoqualmie. She lines the sides with a pattern to represent the nicks of wood found on traditional moon carvings, and the ripples in the water created by cedar canoes and paddles.
In deep brown, tan, and dark blue, Bethany adds even more significance to her design by using the natural colors found on the woods of cedar trees and the dirt it grows from. Her blanket honors the cedar's sturdy roots, the water that gives it life, the ecosystem it belongs to, and the spirit of the moon carver who puts in hard work to create beautiful storyboards. Wrap yourself in Bethany's Moon Carver Wool Blanket and feel connected to the long-lived tradition of the Pacific Northwest and honor the cedar tree, Moon the Transformer, and the tradition of moon carving.
"My hope is that people better understand the journey and gratitude we have for the cedar wood that is being carved; from the tree's soil, roots, and water that makes it grow. As well as the spirit and medicine that each carver puts into their work. The moon is known for its transformative powers and the Moon Carver Wool Blanket is a reminder of that power, transformation, and connection that exists in us all," shares Bethany.
