Lightning and thunder often add a foreboding element in books and films, but in the desert they are a welcome friend. "We are an agrarian society," shares artist Pat Pruitt of his Pueblo of Laguna people, "and we pray for rain to come. In our culture, thunder and lightning symbolize the coming of Shiwana, the rain, and its importance to life here in the desert." In his Lightning And Thunder Wool Blanket, Pat has included these heavenly heralds in a design that is both traditional and modern.
Laguna Pueblo is known for its beautiful pottery and ceramic artists—both historically and today—and the typical geometric designs of Laguna Pueblo pottery influences Pat's own art. "I have always found a home with our designs," shares Pat. " The application of the designs on the clay is precise and exacting, very much the same way I approach my jewelry design."
Pat has lent that same geometric sensibility to his Lightning And Thunder Wool Blanket, where blue and white zigzags slash across a dark blue field. These subtle shifts of color are soothing, but also playful, as they evoke what is to come. "I hope this design brings the feeling of that calm before the storm that is filled with electricity and sound," shares Pat. "The feeling becomes an engaging experience, especially when you know what is coming next . . . the rain."
