• If there's anything better than a cute kitten illustration, it's an illustration of a cute kitten and a killer whale working together to follow their dreams.

  Five years ago (right about the time he discovered art), Eighth Generation founder Louie Gong found a feral kitten meowing loudly outside Muckleshoot Tribal College on the Muckleshoot reservation. The future looked bleak for the little tabby, who was scraggy, dehydrated, and full of fleas and ear mites. So Louie took him home that evening with plans to bring him to a vet the next morning for medical attention, and then to a shelter for eventual adoption. When the kitten immediately fell asleep in Louie's passenger seat, however, he realized he had just adopted a cat -- publicly known as Rez Cat. Later that same night, Rez Cat -- obviously used to sleeping in the woods -- chose to curl up in a ball and pass out inside his litter box.

  A photo of that moment generated some interest from cat lovers when posted to Facebook. Rez Cat started showing up in Louie's social media photos frequently, sometimes on purpose and sometimes by accident, and he eventually developed a following of his own. After being told numerous times by people all over the country "We love Rez Cat!" and "We want more Rez Cat", Louie decided to develop a character inspired by his charismatic friend. This t-shirt is his first effort to embody Rez Cat in an Eighth Generation product.

  Rez Cat's real name is Maosie. He's now a highly vocal, 18-pound Goliath that brings humor and a demand for snacks to everyone he encounters.

  The "Good News" two-sided earring design was also created in a way that reflects Louie's usual tributes to both new and old. • The 'Guardians' painting is the currently the best example of Louie's trend-setting merger of cultural themes. The primary design consists of 2 Chinese Guardian Lions (aka Fu Dogs) created using a mix of Northwest Coast and Coast Salish design elements. A closer look reveals three eagles, each one representing a stage of personal development.

  Louie decided to explore this theme after recognizing the overlapping (common) purpose of guardian lions and Coast Salish house posts, which both identify and protect important spaces.

  The original 8' x 8' painting was created in 2013 for the Wing Luke Museum's "Cultural Confluences: People of Native and Asian Heritage" exhibition. In 2015, Louie was commissioned by the City of Seattle to paint a variation of this design on a bentwood box for Xi Jinping, the President of China.

  Honu is the Hawaiian word for turtle and symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. The honu is a voyager and has become a symbol of gracefully navigating the turbulent waters of life. For many Hawaiians, this aumakua (guardian animal) is a symbol of their ancestors helping guide them through their lives.

• In addition to being a dad, husband, and artist, Kyle (Hawaiian/Japanese/Filipino) is the Special Assistant to the President for Inclusion and Assistant Professor of Education at Utah Valley University (UVU) and conducts workshops to give underrepresented youth a platform to tell their stories through artistic expression. After meeting Louie at a Mockups workshop at UVU, he was inspired to begin integrating art with his community work. Kyle describes his aesthetic as urban pattern-based Polynesian cultural art. He began his art career as a street artist in Los Angeles, and over time, as his style has evolved, he says he realized the power of art to communicate stories. Kyle now uses his skills as an artist to connect with and empower young people.

• Louie Gong (Nooksack), founder of Eighth Generation, is a self-taught artist who was raised by his grandparents in the Nooksack tribal community in northwest Washington. He got his start by painting cultural art on shoes, but realized that creating one-of-a-kind pieces did not provide a sustainable pathway to success, and began applying his artwork to accessibly-priced products. Louie’s unique style merges traditional Coast Salish art with influences from his mixed heritage and urban environment to create work that resonates widely across communities and cultures.

• The LG Guardian is indicative of Louie Gong's (Nooksack) trend-setting merger of art traditions and themes from his mixed heritage and urban environment. Inspired by the overlapping purpose of the guardian lion and Coast Salish house post, the LG Guardian is a Chinese Guardian Lion (a.k.a Fu Dog) designed in the style of northwest Native art.
  

  If you look closely, you can see that the design depicts the male and female guardian lions facing one another. Their combined profile images create a single - more formidable - guardian.

  This beautiful case is made with real maple and finished with a protective clear coat.
