Gail White Eagle's (Muckleshoot & Chehalis) vision for this Coast Salish design came to her when she heard the story of a resilient Native warrior who was fighting in the Indian Wars of the 1800’s. The lone warrior had been skillfully evading the White man for a long time even though he had no support from anyone. Unfortunately, he was eventually captured and killed. A witness to the bloodshed described the warrior's sacrifice as "the color of rose hips." This design, which is Gail's interpretation of rose hips, honors the the spirit and sacrifice of the “Rose Hip Warrior.”

The red triangles in the design are representative of the way rose hips, a fruit that develops from the blossoms of the wild rose plant, hang when they grow. The herringbone/twill design represents how the brave Native Warrior skillfully eluded his enemies.
