In a tradition that goes back millennia, Navajo weavers are world famous for the skill, complexity, and quality of their woven designs. In his Tribute Scarf, Diné (Navajo) artist Jared Yazzie combines the weaving tradition of his grandmothers with modern artistic sensibilities in a design that is the perfect blend of past and present.

“I created the Tribute design in collaboration with my late grandmothers, both of whom were weavers,” shares Jared. “I traveled home to research the rugs they wove, and noticed similar patterns and colors across the scope of their works.” Combining these elements from both his maternal and paternal grandmothers’ work, Jared pays tribute to his grandmothers and heritage in this gorgeous design.

The pattern and colors both tell a story in this Native-designed wool scarf. “You can recognize where a weaver is from based on the colors and pattern they weave with,” said Jared. From his maternal grandmother, Jared used the “two gray hills” design that is popular where she is from (the western agency of the Navajo Nation). From his paternal grandmother, Jared incorporated a white stripe to represent the pale thread she used in her weaving, which was dyed using onion roots.

“These details tell the story of their lives, and I created the Tribute design to continue that story through my own artwork,” says Jared.
